How to Prepare Your Mask for Underwater Adventures
Share
Congratulations, you have just purchased your new scuba mask!
Now what?
Before hitting the water, you are going to want to properly prep your mask to prevent it from fogging. When you purchase your mask, it comes with a protective coating on the lenses that keep it from being damaged in transport and storage. With proper care you will enjoy years of clear high visibility diving. Depending on the frequency of use and the care you take for your mask you should expect to get between 5-10 years of diving from your purchase.
If you purchase a mask in a dive shop, they will typically prep your mask for you. If you purchase online or the shop did not prep your mask you will need to follow a few steps to get ready for your underwater adventure.
First, you will need to remove the protective coating.
Most new masks have a thin layer of silicone residue from the manufacturing process, which causes constant fogging. You need to remove this layer before your first dive. There are a couple of methods for removing this coating.
Flame Method (For Tempered Glass Lenses Only): Don't be worried if the dive tech takes a lighter to your newly purchased mask. This is the most effective way to remove the coating from your mask.
- Using a lighter or match, you will take the flame and move it around the inside of the lens of your mask. Ensuring that you do not catch the skirt of the mask.
- Hold a lighter or match just above the inside of the lens until it turns black from soot.
- Let it cool, then wipe away the soot with a clean cloth.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- You might need to repeat this process several times until the lenses no longer fog when you breathe on them.
⚠️ Warning: Do NOT use this method on masks with plastic lenses or coatings, as it may damage them.
Toothpaste Method (Safe for All Glass Masks): If you do not have a tempered glass mask or if the burning method did not sufficiently remove the coating on the mask you will want to use the toothpaste method.
- Use a non-gel, non-abrasive, non-minty toothpaste.
- Apply a small amount to the inside of the lenses and rub it in circular motions with your fingers or a soft cloth.
- Let it sit for a few minutes, then rinse thoroughly with fresh water.
- Repeat 2-3 times if necessary.
Preventing Fogging
If properly prepped your mask should be ready for diving. But before each dive or snorkel session you will want to treat your mask to prevent condensation. There are a couple of ways divers ensure a clear diving experience.
-
Spit Method: The classic and easiest way to prevent fogging is by spitting into the inside of the dry mask, rub it around with your fingers, then rinse. This method is effective but you might need to touch it up during your dive.
-
Gentle Soap Method: Typically your crew will provide you with a solution to spray on your mask. If not you can do this at home before you go. Mix a few drops of baby shampoo with water in a spray bottle. Spray or rub onto the inside of the lens, then rinse lightly. It’s gentle on the eyes and lasts longer than spit.
- Anti-Fog Solution: When investing in a mask, it is important to take proper care of it to ensure its longevity. Which is why we recommend you purchase an anti-fog solution. Available at Xico Dive Shop- Trident Defog is formulated with chemicals that effectively break surface tension, preventing condensation from forming on the mask lens, potentially performing better than a generic soap.
Rinsing and Maintenance:
When you invest in a mask you are investing in an enhanced diving experience. You will want to take special care of your mask to extend the life of your equipment.
Clean your mask: Always rinse your mask with fresh water after each use. This will remove salt, chlorine and debris. Let your mask air dry completely in a shaded area. Avoid direct sunlight which deteriorates the silicone.
Avoid Touching the Inside of the Lens; After applying an anti-fog treatment, avoid touching the inside of the lens, as oils from your fingers can make it fog up again.
Store It Properly: Your mask purchase should come with a protective case. Always store your dry mask in its protective case to prevent scratches. Then, store your mask in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Extra Tips for a Better Diving Experience
✅ If you wear glasses, consider getting a prescription mask for clear vision underwater.
✅ Try a black silicone skirt on your mask if you prefer reduced glare and distractions.
✅ If diving in cold water, use a thermal anti-fog gel for better performance.
✅ Always carry a backup mask if you’re on a long dive trip.
Taking proper care of your scuba mask will ensure its longevity. Prepping your mask after purchase and before each dive will ensure a fog-free, comfortable, and enjoyable dive. When you aren't worried about a foggy or leaky mask you will be able to fully enjoy the beauty of the underwater world rather than struggling with a foggy or leaky mask.
