Five Equipment Essentials for Every Scuba Diver

Five Equipment Essentials for Every Scuba Diver

There is no bigger thrill than the journey of becoming a scuba diver.

Whether you just completed your first Discovery Scuba Dive or you are doing one of the many scuba diving certifications, you will want to start investing in your own personal diving equipment.

Stepping into a dive equipment store for the first time can feel overwhelming; especially with the high cost of gear and the wide variety of products and styles.

Knowing where to begin and what to prioritize is essential to ensure you invest in the right gear without breaking the bank. To help you get started, we’ve narrowed it down to the top five pieces of scuba diving equipment every scuba diver should invest in buying.

1. Dive Mask and Snorkel

mask and snorkel

Your dive mask is one of the most personal and critical pieces of scuba gear. The first item you should invest in is a quality mask as it will have the biggest impact on your diving experience. Your scuba mask is your window to the underwater world. The mask enables clear underwater vision by creating an air pocket in front of your eyes, it also provides a way to equalize pressure in your ears by pinching your nose while descending through the water.

A well-fitting mask will create a watertight seal, preventing water from entering your eyes and ensuring a comfortable diving experience. It is important to ensure that your mask fits your face and forms a leak-free seal.

The type of mask you choose will also depend on your preference. All masks have tempered glass lenses but you can get a single lens mask which will offer a wider field of vision or double lens masks which tend to be lower volume and provide a more focused field of vision. The choice between single and double lens is entirely personal; you may want to try both styles to see which works best for you.

It is recommended that you try on masks before making a purchase. As facial size, shape and features vary between each individual, your dive buddy´s ideal mask might not be the best fit for you.

When purchasing a mask it is important to also get a snorkel. A snorkel is considered an essential part of dive equipment as it allows you to conserve air while surface swimming to and from the boat. It is also useful in emergency situations when a diver runs low on air or encounters high waves on the surface.

Right now at Xico Dive Shop, we are offering a promotion where you will receive a free snorkel with every mask purchase.

2. Fins and Dive Boots

Fins are more than just an essential tool for movement, they affect your trim and buoyancy in the water. Fins can be positive, neutral or negatively buoyant, your choice will affect your movement and body positioning when you dive. Positively buoyant fins are typically better for warm water diving in the Caribbean sea, while negatively buoyant fins are better for cold water like in cenotes.

You can choose between closed heel fins, which do not require a boot. These types of fins allow you to swim with bare feet and are best for warm water diving, if you are prone to getting cold you may choose to add a neoprene sock to keep your feet warm and prevent blisters when using this fin style.

Fins and boots

Open heel fins, are designed with a strap and require that you use a boot with them. Open heel fins are more versatile for diving in different temperature water as your boots will provide protection from rocks, corals and colder temperatures.

Fins vary in length and flexibility, your choice of fin will depend on your personal preference, the type of diving you do, and the temperature of the water where you typically dive.

It is important that you try on your fins and ensure the proper fit to avoid injury or discomfort when diving.

3. Dive Computer

Dive computers are used to indicate the time remaining for a no-stop or no-decompression limit; this is when divers can safely surface without the requirement to perform decompression stops.

Garmin Descent

Dive computers allow you to maximise your bottom time whilst remaining safe both below and above water. A dive computer is an essential tool that allows you to dive freely without relying on dive tables. Dive computers provide critical real-time information that helps you plan and execute safe dives, making them a smart investment early in your diving journey.

Dive computers range from entry level computers that are solely for diving, to advanced computers with integrated pods that connect to your tank for real time information.

You can also choose from dive computers that have integrated fitness trackers and smart watches. Your choice of dive computer will depend on your use, personal style preferences, and budget.

4. Wetsuit

As a diver you will want to invest in your own wetsuit. Wetsuits provide warmth and protect your skin from the sun, stings, and abrasions. The right thickness depends on the water temperature where you dive and if you tend to get cold quickly.

3mm Scuba Supreme Wetsuit

Typically for diving in the Caribbean a 3mm wetsuit is perfect for the tropical warm waters.

If you are diving in cooler water or doing a lot of cenote diving you may wish to do a 5-7mm suit which provides more warmth in cooler waters.

Wetsuits are highly personal so your choice of fit and style will depend on your height, body shape and weight. It is important that your wetsuit fits snugly to provide effective insulation without restricting movement.

It is important to try on wetsuits in person to ensure the proper fit, different brands have different cuts and fit. You will often have to size up to get the perfect fit.

5. Surface Marker Buoy (SMB)

Surface Marker Buoy (SMB) is a critical safety device that makes you visible to boats and other divers while on the surface. It’s especially useful during drift dives or when surfacing far from the dive boat. Compact and easy to deploy, an SMB is an affordable piece of equipment that can make a big difference in ensuring your safety.
